ANTI-CORRUPTION EXPERTS TO MEET AT OAS

  December 4, 2008

Anti-Corruption experts from the hemisphere will meet at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington from December 8-12, to review the progress of four countries – Grenada, Suriname, Brazil and Belize – in their efforts to implement measures from the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (IACAC), including those related to government hiring, procurement, and whistle blower protection.
The Committee will also adopt the Hemispheric Report, which summarizes the recommendations made in the Second Round of Review and notes progress in implementing the recommendations of the previous round. In addition, the Committee will consider and adopt the documents related to the Third Round of review, including the methodology, questionnaire, structure for the country reports, and schedule, among others.
OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will deliver remarks for the 14th Meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Mechanism for Follow-Up on Implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (MESICIC).
The MESICIC review process operates in a series of successive “rounds” in which each State Party is reviewed to see how well it is complying with selected provisions of the IACAC. During the December meeting, which concludes the Second Sound of MESICIC review, the Committee will adopt the four country reports.
MESICIC was created in 2001 to monitor compliance with the 1996 Inter-American Convention against Corruption.
