OAS Permanent Council Commemorates the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States will hold a special meeting on Monday, March 25 at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) in Simon Bolívar Hall at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, “Remembering Slavery: the Power of the Arts for Justice.”

Notable guest speakers will include the Vice President of Costa Rica, Campbell Barr; the Secretary for Policies to Promote Racial Equality in Brazil, Sandra Terena; the Minister of Culture of Colombia, Carmen Inés Vásquez; the Senator of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Ancelma Perlacios Peralta; and the former Undersecretary for Development for Afro-Mexican Peoples of Guerrero State, Bulmaro García Zavaleta.

The meeting will be opened by the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Carlos Alberto Calles Castillo, and will include words from the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro.

At the end of the meeting, a commemorative painting will be unveiled.
