OAS and Panama Organize Meeting of Ministers of Education of the Americas in Panama

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Panama will organize the Eighth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Education this Wednesday, February 4 and Thursday, February 5 in Panama City.

The meeting will focus on the theme “Building an Inter-American Education Agenda: Education with Equity for Prosperity,” and its inauguration will include speeches by the President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela; the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, who will take part on behalf of the Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza; and the Minister of Education, Marcela Paredes de Vásquez. Also among the speakers during the two-day event will be the Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the OAS, Chair of the Permanent Council, and Representative of Suriname to the Organization, Niermala Badrising.

The agenda of the meeting, which brings together the Ministers of Education of the member states, will focus on the principles of intersectorality, interculturality, and collaboration. Specifically, the ministers will receive a report on the work of the Inter-American Committee on Education from 2012 to 2014 and discuss the following issues: quality, equity and inclusion in education; teacher education and professional development; comprehensive early childhood education care; mechanisms for building an Inter-American Education Agenda; cooperation practices in building the agenda; and different perspectives on an institutional framework for education in the Inter-American system.

The closing of the event will feature Minister Paredes de Vásquez and the Executive Secretary for Integral Development of the OAS, Sherry Tross.
