OAS HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CONVENES SESSION BEGINNING MONDAY

  February 20, 2004

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will convene its 119th regular session next Monday, February 23. The inauguration, which is open to the media, is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. with opening remarks by the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council Chairman, Ambassador Paul Durand of Canada, and IACHR Chairman José Zalaquett.

During its three-week closed session, the Commission will consider a series of reports, petitions and individual cases relating to various countries of the Americas. More than 50 hearings have been scheduled with individuals, organizations and member state representatives on the general human rights situation in the hemisphere or on particular issues within the purview of the Commission.
