Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Opens Session

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will open its 124th regular session on Wednesday, March 1. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, the Chair of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Sonia Johnny of Saint Lucia, and the President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Evelio Fernández Arévalos, will speak at the event scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

During the three-week session, the Commission will hear individual cases and petitions pertaining to different countries in the hemisphere, which are in the stages prior to recommendation to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. It will also hear cases that may require precautionary and provisionary measures on urgent situations.

The Commission will hold more than 60 hearings on cases and petitions, and will hear from different individuals, organizations and representatives from member states who will present information on the human rights situation in the hemisphere.
