The new Permanent Representative of Uruguay, Washington Abdala, today presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.

Ambassador Abdala said he would base his work agenda on the central pillars of the OAS -democracy, human rights, integral development and multidimensional security-, because “each of these items are chapters of people's lives and not mere abstractions.” “The message I want to convey is the vocation of Uruguay for working together with the countries of the hemisphere, with the General Secretariat and within the context of the ingrained principles that we stand for as a region and for which the OAS exists,” added the Uruguayan diplomat.

For his part, Secretary General Almagro said that Uruguay shares the same objectives as the OAS in terms of rights, freedom, democracy, well-being and development. “With a Permanent Representative with the trajectory and intellectual skills of Washington Abdala, Uruguay remains in good hands at the OAS. His people and his government can be sure that the republican values and principles that characterize them will be heard loud and clear in the most important political forum in the hemisphere,” said Secretary General Almagro.

Before being designated as Ambassador of Uruguay, Abdala was the Representative of the Secretary General of the OAS in the territorial differendum between Belize and Guatemala between 2018 and 2020.
