The Organization of American States (OAS) will send an Electoral Observation Mission to the Dominican Republic for the municipal elections of February 16 and the presidential and congressional elections of May 17, 2020, according to the agreements signed today with the authorities of the Caribbean country at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, D.C.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted the contribution of these missions to the strengthening of democratic institutions in the region. "The objective of any Electoral Observation Mission is to contribute to the strengthening of electoral processes in the hemisphere, and consequently, to the democracies of the region," said the Secretary General.

The Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, Josué Fiallo, welcomed the OAS contribution to the transparency of electoral processes. "We appreciate the contribution of the OAS to strengthening the democratic institutions of our country," said Ambassador Fiallo.

For his part, the President of the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic, Julio César Castaños, indicated that his agency and the OAS will ensure that the electoral process is transparent. "As members of the Inter-American System and signatories of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, we believe that electoral observation is a guarantee that elections will be fair and not fraudulent."

The Head of the Mission will be the former President of Chile Eduardo Frei. This will be the 17th election that the OAS has observed in the Dominican Republic.
