The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Subnational Entities Members of the Zona de Integración del Centro Oeste de América del Sur (ZICOSUR) today signed a cooperation agreement that aims to achieve sustainable development and to work together to improve competitiveness through institutional strengthening.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted the importance of working with regional governments, “because they are close to the people and their daily problems.” “This is a commendable job because we are looking together to achieve the best capabilities for the realization of the real goals of our people. More rights for more people is our philosophy and it is up to you to ensure that the institutions can respond to the needs of the people,” said Secretary General Almagro.

For his part, the President of ZICOSUR and Governor of the Argentine province of Tucuman, Juan Luis Manzur, said the agreement marks a before and after in the life of the institution.  “ZICOSUR has existed for more than three decades and this agreement renews our hope for a better future, which is what we want, to join together, articulate, to improve the quality of life of our people,” he added.

ZICOSUR brings together 55 subnational governments from seven countries in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and Uruguay), and through the agreement with the OAS seeks to achieve the insertion of the subregion into the international context, to improve competitiveness, foreign trade and the promotion of social and cultural integration.
