The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, “Remembering Slavery: the Power of the Arts for Justice.”
The meeting featured special guests who spoke about the struggle to achieve equality, including:
· Vice President of Costa Rica, Campbell Barr;
· Secretary for Policies to Promote Racial Equality in Brazil, Sandra Terena;
· Minister of Culture of Colombia, Carmen Inés Vásquez;
· Senator of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Ancelma Perlacios Peralta; and
· Former Undersecretary for Development for Afro-Mexican Peoples of Guerrero State, Bulmaro García Zavaleta.
The Chair of the Council and Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the OAS, Carlos Alberto Calles Castillo, said the event was "a space for reflection where the member states can collectively develop a better understanding of the significance of slavery, trafficking of slaves and their consequences in the lives of people of African descent and of societies in general."
For his part, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recalled that "the valuable contributions of people of African descent, which have been and continue to be hidden from sight, have been innumerable in all spheres of the political, economic, social and cultural heritage of the Americas."
At the close of the meeting, a triptych painting done by Haitian artist Vanessa Craan was presented at the main building of the OAS to pay homage to the millions of lives lost during the centuries of slavery. This commemoration is part of the activities carried out within the framework of the Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in the Americas, which seeks to highlight the significant contributions of people of African descent to the societies of the hemisphere. A series of cultural activities will take place at the OAS headquarters in Washington as part of the commemorative week.
