The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the President of the Peruvian Congress, Daniel Salaverry, today signed a cooperation agreement on legislative transparency.
The agreement will promote a certification in parliamentary innovation, the realization of opinion polling and an international event on the role of the legislative powers in the age of digital democracy.
Upon signing the document, Secretary General Almagro highlighted that technology and social media have changed the forms of traditional political communication. “The objective of this agreement is to support the Peruvian Congress in its efforts to give the institution innovative, transparent and accessible mechanisms that enable it to address the current citizen disaffection, improve bi-directionality in political communication, modernize document management and generate a more agile and efficient institutional communication strategy,” said the Secretary General.
For his part, the President of the Congress of Peru emphasized that the agreement is in line with the objective of the legislators of the country to restore the faith of the people in Congress. “This agreement is fundamental to be able to strengthen the institutions in our country and to strengthen democracy,” said Salaverry.
