The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) met today to commemorate the "Encounter of Two Worlds" and to highlight the interpretations, impact and heritage of this historic date.
During the meeting, the Chair of the Permanent Council and Representative of Ecuador to the OAS, Carlos Alberto Játiva, affirmed that the date of October 12 "invites us to reflect on the meaning of interculturality from the perspective of an America that recognizes the value of its native peoples, and that has welcomed and integrated diverse cultures and nationalities."
For his part, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, said the date "marks a before and after in the history of humanity." "Today we are a diverse region and a hemisphere of peace, we share principles based on the defense of democracy and human rights that unite us, we share those values with Europe, we share them with Spain, although We still have equality to conquer, rights to consolidate, democracy to affirm, "he added.
The Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, Cristóbal Valdés, affirmed, for his part, that "the encounter between two worlds, with its highlights and lowpoints, made possible an approach, a contact and a mutual enrichment".
