The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated the birth of Simón Bolívar, one of the heroes of Latin American independence.

The Chair of the Permanent Council and Ambassador of Costa Rica, Rita Hernández, highlighted the continued validity of the thinking of the Liberator today. "235 years after his birth, the work of Simon Bolívar transcends history, and his thought continues to be a source of inspiration for new generations. By commemorating his birthday, we contribute to keeping his legacy and his thoughts alive," said Ambassador Hernández.

For his part, OAS Assistant Secretary General Nestor Mendez highlighted the integrity of Bolívar shown throughout his life. "In commemorating his life, we must remember his magnanimity and his self-imposition of the bold obligation to make decisions in the name of human dignity and freedom," said Ambassador Mendez.

The meeting in homage to Bolivar was held in the Hall that bears his name, the usual venue for meetings of the Permanent Council in Washington, DC.
