The new Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Rita Hernández Bolaños, today presented credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and reaffirmed her country's commitment to the principles and values of the Organization.

Ambassador Hernández Bolaños said her work agenda is aligned with the four pillars of the OAS: Democracy, Human Rights, Multidimensional Security and Sustainable Development. "We will work for more democracy, more security, more full enjoyment of human rights and greater development," she said.

For his part, Secretary General Almagro committed his support for Costa Rica at the head of the political body of the Organization. "We know that the challenges are many and complex, you will be the next President of the Permanent Council. We know that because of being a woman, the road has more obstacles. We count on your commitment to the principles of the OAS to face them successfully," he said.

Costa Rica will assume the Presidency of the Permanent Council from July 1 to September 30, 2018. The Chair of the Permanent Council is held successively by the representatives of OAS Member States following the alphabetical order in Spanish. The Chair is currently held by Colombia.
