The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Social Group National Spanish Organization for the Blind (ONCE) signed an agreement today to promote the participation and full inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of life, and to move towards the fulfillment of the objective of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to ensure that no person with disabilities is left behind in the road to development.

After signing the document at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the ONCE Vice President, Alberto Durán, said the objective of the agreement is to expand assistance to people with disabilities in Latin American countries where they live in complicated situations. "It is a matter of rights, because people with disabilities in many cases suffer the confiscation of their rights, and it is also a matter of justice and efficiency, because if we leave people behind in the end it weighs on the evolution of societies," he said.

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said that incorporating people with disabilities into political decision-making "is part of our flagship mission to achieve more rights for more people." "I reiterate our enthusiasm to seal this agreement with the ONCE Social Group of Spain, always with the aim of translating it into concrete results, both regionally and nationally. Because only together we will achieve more rights and more inclusion for more people," he added.

The agreement foresees strengthening the participation of organizations of people with disabilities in decision-making areas and developing specific initiatives in the field of educational and labor inclusion, as well as access to information and culture.
