The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Federal Attorney´s Office for Consumer Protection of Mexico (PROFECO) today agreed to strengthen the Inter-American System of Rapid Alerts of the Consumer Safety and Health Network (CSHN) to protect the rights of consumers in the Americas, during a ceremony at the headquarters of the hemispheric Organization in Washington DC.

Upon signing the document, the Federal Consumer Attorney of Mexico, Rogelio Cerda, said “with this agreement, we seek to guarantee the optimal use of consumers and inhibit harmful products, especially those that put health at risk.”

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said that “in a world in which we are exposed to unsafe products that can cause health problems, we celebrate this agreement that aims to protect the rights of consumers.”

The OAS and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) created the CSHN, the only Inter-American mechanism for consumer protection. PROFECO currently occupies the chair of the CSHN.
