The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Panama today signed an agreement through which the Organization will provide cooperation and technical assistance for the clearance of unexploded munitions in contaminated areas in the Río Hato Shooting Range in the province of Coclé.

The project will allow the destruction of munitions in an old shooting and bombing area of more than 7,000 hectares, now used for livestock, agricultural and forestry purposes by people from the communities in the area.

During the signing of the agreement, the Ambassador of Panama to the OAS, Jesús Sierra, thanked the OAS for its support on the matter and said the project "will contribute to strengthening citizen security in this area." For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, praised the commitment of Panama to the management of environment and natural resources, and said this initiative "is an opportunity to clean and eliminate the danger to those Panamanians who live and work in the zone affected by unexploded munitions.”
