Secretary General Visited by Indigenous Council of the South (CONISUR) regarding TIPNIS

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with a group of leaders of the Indigenous Council of the South (CONISUR), one of the parties to the dispute over construction of a highway in the Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory (TIPNIS), between the Bolivian departments of Beni and Cochabamba.

The highest OAS official heard the arguments of the CONISUR representatives, headed by indigenous leader Gumersindo Pladel, who support construction of the Villa Tunari-San Ignacio de Moxos stretch of highway in the TIPNIS.

Secretary General Insulza, in Cochabamba for the forty-second regular session of the OAS General Assembly, will meet tomorrow, June 3, with the indigenous representatives who oppose construction of the highway.
