The Member Countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) today agreed to debate the theme, “Strengthening Cyber Security in the Americas,” during the XII Regular Session of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE), to be held March 8, 2012, at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington, DC.

During the first preparatory meeting of the Twelfth Session, presided by Ambassador Gillian Bristol, Permanent Representative of Grenada and Chair of CICTE, she highlighted “the importance of this issue, which is not new to CICTE, it is not new to the OAS” but in which “there is room for improvement in what we do.”

The theme was submitted for consideration to the delegations by Ambassador Jorge Skinner-Klee, Vice Chair of CICTE, who highlighted, for his part, that “cyber security is no longer an issue in some distant future, but rather has become like a cyst in the urgency of our present.” He added that “we the States are called to face the challenge of keeping an environment that promotes freedom and security, for which we estimate that we must promote cyber security in this Hemisphere to confront these challenges.”

The Guatemalan diplomat added that “the nations of the Americas must work together to improve the integrity and security of information technologies and promote international cooperation to support actions directed towards avoiding or reducing attacks to information networks and their users.”
