The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Argentine federal judge Sergio Torres in his office at Organization headquarters in Washington, DC, to talk about human rights in the South American country and the work by the hemispheric institution in that field.

During the meeting, the two authorities talked about the importance of preserving the historic memory and achieving justice for the victims of human rights violations, and they assessed the positive example of Argentina in this sense. They also recalled the tragedy experienced by that country and the harrowing violations of human rights perpetrated during the military dictatorship, at the “Escuela Superior de Mecánica de la Armada” or ESMA.

Secretary General Insulza also highlighted the issue of public security for countries of the Hemisphere and its links to the strengthening of the judicial system and the defense of personal rights. Judge Torres has been invited to participate in the regular session of the OAS Permanent Council on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011, to make a presentation on the Argentine experience regarding the investigation and prosecution of crimes against humanity from a judicial perspective.
