The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Association of Electoral Tribunals of the Mexican Republic (ATERM) today signed an agreement to cooperate in the following areas:

• Development and implementation of joint research projects;
• Exchange of personnel for the strengthening of study programs and research;
• Creation of proposals for preliminary drafts of inter-American legislative texts, model laws, and legislative guidelines; and
• Holding joint meetings to discuss matters of common interest.

During the event, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, recalled the extensive experience of the OAS in observing electoral processes that have allowed it to "accumulate an ample knowledge and experience that we must continue to share." In addition, he said "only with the cooperation of all and institutions like those represented here today will we be able to continue working to fulfill our objective set forth in Article 1 of the Democratic Charter: the peoples of the Americas have a right to democracy and their governments have an obligation to promote and defend it.”

For his part, the Presiding Magistrate of ATERM, César Lorenzo Wong Meraz, said the signing of the agreement will be "a watershed for our association, through which we will be doing research and training activities." Wong Meraz also reiterated the ATERM's goal of "being part of this new Mexico, a Mexico of institutions, of respect for human rights and electoral-political rights.”
