The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with members of the United States Congress and their respective staff to offer them a view of the main events in the Haitian electoral process, the situation in the Caribbean country a few days before the March 20 elections, and the work of electoral observation and electoral technical support the OAS has conducted in Haiti. The meeting was held in the offices of Congressman Gregory Meeks in Washington, DC.

Meeks, Representative from New York, is one of the founders and leaders of the OAS Caucus in the Congress of the United States. The event was co-organized by Representative Eliot Engel, also from New York, with the participation of Congresswomen Maxine Waters from California and Frederica Wilson from Florida, and the staff of Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen from Florida and Yvette Clarke from New York.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza described the work of electoral observation and electoral technical support of the OAS in Haiti, in a mission deployed months before the beginning of the electoral campaign during the first round of presidential and legislative elections of November 28, 2010. The work of electoral observation of the OAS will continue until after the announcement of the final results of the second round, to be held March 20. The head of the hemispheric Organization presented an analysis of the different challenges the Haitian people face and have been facing in the electoral context, and in the reconstruction of their country following the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010.
