Uruguay today delivered the deposit of the instrument of ratification of the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination and other Forms of Intolerance to the Organization of American States (OAS), during a ceremony at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington DC.
With this, Uruguay joins Costa Rica as the first countries to ratify the Convention, which triggers its automatic entry into force on November 11.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said that this is a historic day for the Inter-American System of Human Rights and called on other countries in the region to join this initiative. "What is being sought through this Inter-American Convention is to ensure that the peoples of the Americas, a hemisphere that is a melting pot, can live together in peace, and that we are all equal before the law," Almagro stated in his speech.
For his part, the Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the OAS, Hugo Cayrús, emphasized the commitment of his country to the Inter-American System of Human Rights. "Uruguay is a country committed at national and international level to the promotion, protection and defense of human rights. These are principles that are among the essential priorities of the Uruguayan State as they constitute the basic political-institutional assets of the country," said Cayrús.
