The Organization of American States (OAS) and the nongovernmental entity Asuntos del Sur today signed an agreement to jointly strengthen the efforts of both institutions to empower traditionally marginalized groups in the region.
The agreement, signed at OAS headquarters in Washington DC, seeks to expand cooperation on issues related to rights and inclusion of Afro-descendant populations and other vulnerable groups, strengthening emerging leadership and human rights on the Internet and digital expansion in the region. Under the agreement, projects, programs and activities will be carried out to share experiences, provide training and take actions to develop more democratic and inclusive societies in Latin America.
At the signing of the agreement, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro spoke about the Organization's commitment to equality and access to rights and said "we have been working on concrete actions in cooperation with member states, civil society, academia, and other key actors to underscore the situation of vulnerable people, who often have no voice because of the unequal power relations that almost always end up canceling out any possibility of enjoying their rights under equal conditions.”
For his part, the Director of Asuntos del Sur, Matias Bianchi, commented on the topics of common interest for both institutions and recalled that "we have been working with the OAS for a long time on an agenda focused on empowerment and democratic transformation, which already has a diagnostic of the sectors that we have denominated 'margins of democracy'. It is there where we have found a very productive convergence, and today it is time to consolidate this joint strategy."
Asuntos del Sur is an organization based in Argentina that has as its guiding principle the promotion of more democratic and inclusive societies in Latin America.
