The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Human Rights Commission of the Federal District of Mexico City today signed an agreement to undertake joint actions in the defense and promotion of human rights.

The President of the Commission, Perla Gómez Gallardo, said the agreement will strengthen the work of the OAS and the institution she heads in defense of human rights. "One of the great strengths we have as institutions is that there are common themes, common needs, and there are actions that we can replicate, especially in terms of best practices," said Gomez Gallardo.

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said the aim of the agreement is to help people in vulnerable situations to claim their rights, and not only at the hemispheric level but also locally. "The agreement seeks to provide a platform for those who for many years have been prevented from exercising their rights, so that they can fully enjoy their rights," he said.

The OAS and the Commission will held seminars on the rights of persons with disabilities in the first quarter of 2017, among other activities.
