The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today opened the Third Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development in Asunción, Paraguay, and stated that the “best social policy is decent and sustainable work.”

Secretary General Almagro urged participants not to ignore the region’s sectors with fewer resources. “It is our duty to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable people with full civil and political rights,” he asserted. “Opportunities should not be based on race, birthplace, social status, family background, or sexual orientation,” he added.

The head of the OAS opened the event along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Eladio Loizaga, and the Minister of Social Action, Héctor Cárdenas. The ministerial meeting, which main theme is “Overcoming Inequalities for More Inclusive Societies,” will take place tomorrow in the Paraguayan capital.
