Colombia today assumed the Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the Organization of American States (OAS), in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington DC.

The Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, Andrés González, said taking on the role was “a special source of pride” for his country. Among the priorities of his term as Chair, the Ambassador listed energy integration in the Caribbean, strengthening of disaster risk management, integration of the region into global efforts on climate change, the promotion of sustainable cities and a decrease in extreme poverty in the region.

CIDI, which includes all the member states of the OAS, reports directly to the General Assembly and is intended to promote cooperation among countries for the furtherance of their integral development and, in particular, to help eliminate extreme poverty.

During the ceremony, Saint Lucia took over the position of Vice Chair of CIDI.
