The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women – which takes place tomorrow – in a meeting in which representatives recalled the need for the countries of the region to continue implementing public policies to prevent, punish and eradicate violence against women, in compliance with their obligations under the Convention of Belém do Pará.

The Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the OAS, Carmen Moreno, presented the advances in the hemisphere on the issue to member states, as well as the numerous pending challenges. The representatives of the member states referred to the issues of victimization, discrimination, harassment, lack of representativeness, intolerance, and stereotypes that remain in many of the countries of the region.

The meeting also included analysis of the importance of the Social Charter of the Americas, adopted in the OAS General Assembly of Cochabamba, Bolivia, in June 2012. The background and applicability of the Charter were presented by the Permanent Representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Jorge Valero Briceño, the Secretary for Access to Rights and Equality of the OAS, Ideli Salvatti, and the Permanent Representative of Chile and Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development, Ambassador Juan Pablo Lira.
