Paraguay Recognizes Work of OAS Secretary General during Independence Celebration

The work of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, at the head of the hemispheric Organization was highlighted today during the celebration of the 204th anniversary of the independence of Paraguay at the headquarters of the OAS in Washington DC, an event attended by diplomats and officials from Paraguay and various countries from the region.

The Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the OAS, Elisa Ruíz Díaz, said the OAS of the 21st century, under the leadership of Secretary General Insulza “today has a Strategic Vision that allows for its consolidation as an inclusive Organization of sovereign countries, with different visions and legitimized by democracy.”

In thanking the OAS leader for his work during the last decade, Ambassador Ruíz recalled some of the achievements of the mandate of Secretary General Insulza and said “his leadership marks a before and after in terms of the work done in the promotion and protection of democracy, human rights, freedom of expression and the development of the region.”

For his part, the Secretary General expressed his gratitude for the recognition and his personal appreciation for the South American country, one of the founding members of the OAS in 1948.
