The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the former Presidents of Bolivia, Jorge Quiroga; of Colombia, Andrés Pastrana; and of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, who delivered a statement signed by 24 former Latin American leaders expressing concern regarding the situation in Venezuela.

During the meeting, the OAS leader reiterated his certainty that the only solution to the Venezuelan crisis requires opening a process of dialogue between the government and the opposition; holding fair trials for political prisoners; and developing an electoral process that offers guaranties to all stakeholders.

Former Presidents Quiroga, Pastrana and Calderón, for their part, reiterated their conviction that the international community must play a role in contributing to resolving the situation in Venezuela. In this regard, they called upon Secretary General Insulza to keep leading the way, from the moral ground he enjoys as a fundamental player in the democratization of Latin America in the last decades.
