The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Director General of the Colombian Agency for Reintegration, Joshua Mitrotti, with whom he shared visions on the efforts, accomplishments, challenges and opportunities that the Colombian government is facing in the peace process, in particular regarding the reintegration of former combatants, transitional justice and mechanisms of resocialization, among other issues.
Director Mitrotti expressed the deep appreciation of the Government of Colombia for the "generous support" that the OAS has offered through the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP), whose work "has made a great contribution to the peace efforts of the country" and said that, through its contribution and experience, "it has become a benchmark for the progress made on demobilization, reintegration and disarmament."
Secretary General Insulza recalled that last December the mandate of the MAPP was renewed for three years, which he described as a "strong signal" of the commitment of countries, the Organization and the government to the achievement of peace. Moreover, he said he was convinced the Mission would make a constructive contribution to an eventual peace agreement.
Other topics of the meeting included the challenges and approaches to the work of monitoring and verification; land restitution and reparation for victims; the challenge of expanding institutions to promote democracy as the key to addressing violence; and the continued interest and commitment of other countries within and outside the region with Colombia and its efforts to achieve peace.
