The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Regional Director for Latin America of Interpeace, Ana Glenda Tager, with whom he discussed issues of public security, peace and conflict resolution in the Hemisphere.

During the meeting, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, Secretary General Insulza and Director Tager exchanged views on the importance of supporting countries in the region that face challenges in terms of citizen security, and promoting dialogue and mediation with the participation and contribution of international bodies. Key issues of the meeting included the contributions of the OAS to issues of combating organized crime, the exchange of information on issues related to prison systems and the social and security-related challenges that some Central American countries face with threats such as that posed by gangs.

Both authorities agreed to identify the next steps to move ahead with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2013 between the OAS and Interpeace, by which both organizations agreed to work together in the implementation of programs, projects and activities relating to the promotion of public security and strengthening national processes that contribute to peace in Central America.
