The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insuza, and the Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, today participated in a tribute to Juan Pablo Duarte, hero of the Dominican Republic, in an event organized by the Mission of the country to the OAS in which a floral offering was presented in front of the bust of Duarte at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.
The Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernández; the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, Pedro Vergés; and several representatives of member and observer countries of the OAS participated in the ceremony, which took place at the Hall of Heroes at the headquarters of the Organization to commemorate the 202 anniversary of the birth of Duarte.
Ambassador Verges, who was the only speaker at the ceremony, said to be Dominican means having a "lifelong desire to be true to oneself," an idea firmly held by Duarte when he proposed founding the Dominican Republic in the nineteenth century.
After the ceremony, Secretary General Insulza met privately with Vice President Cedeño de Fernández. During the meeting, the two talked about the preparations for the Seventh Summit of the Americas, to be held in Panama in April, and the political and economic situation in the region. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Verges and the OAS Secretary for External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez.
