The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the representatives of political parties in El Salvador, ahead of a ceremony to mark the signing of a joint declaration of the national political organizations in which they pledged to promote a cross-cutting dialogue to address the main challenges facing the Central American country.

Secretary General Insulza and the leaders of the political parties of El Salvador discussed the importance of the search for positions of consensus that promote the development and well-being of the population. Insulza highlighted the opportunity represented by the call from President Salvador Sánchez Cerén to achieve policies of consensus, urged the country to build upon its experience in the Peace Agreement that ended the civil war and recognized the role of the political leaders in the agreement.

Moreover, the OAS leader and the Salvadoran political leaders discussed the current regional political context, and in particular the agenda of the next Summit of the Americas, which will take place in April in Panama.
