The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with his homologue from the Community of Democracies, Ambassador Maria Leissner, at his offices in the headquarters of the Organization in Washington DC.
During the meeting, the two officials discussed the regional political context and analyzed various aspects of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, as well as the occasions on which it has been invoked. The Secretary General noted that the document is applied at the request of the concerned government or when a severe alteration of the democratic order is observed, but there is still no consensus on the full and precise definition of this.
For her part, Ambassador Leissner said that regional organizations are the best guarantors of democratic systems, and invited the OAS to participate in a discussion on democracy charters of the various regions of the world, to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each.
The Community of Democracies is an intergovernmental coalition, founded in 2000, with the aim of supporting the promotion and strengthening of democracy, its rules and institutions in all states of the world.
