The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received in his office the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the hemispheric body, Archbishop Bernardito C. Auza, with whom he discussed issues of security, development, the environment and democracy in the Hemisphere.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza presented his perspective on the major challenges facing the region in terms of security, the fight against crime and climate change, with special emphasis on the recent meetings of the post-2015 agenda and the discussions held in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly that took place in September in New York.

Another theme of the meeting was the situation in Haiti and aspects related to its demography, migration, legislation, elections, reconstruction efforts after the earthquake, and relations with the Dominican Republic. Both agreed on the importance of continuing international efforts in that country with a view to self-sufficiency, especially in the context of the support provided by MINUSTAH.

The Holy See has been an observer to the OAS since 1978 and has supported its work in the areas of democratic sustainability, peace processes, security and disarmament. Archbishop Auza also serves as the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations.
