The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, participated in the launch of the United States chapter of the América Solidaria Foundation in a ceremony held at the Embassy of Chile in Washington DC.
During the ceremony, Secretary General Insulza highlighted the value of the professional service performed by the volunteers of the foundation, who commit themselves to work in any of the thirteen countries in which the 184 different projects are carried out. "It is wonderful that we have the ability and willingness to attract young people to dedicate a space in their lives to support those in need in our Hemisphere," said the OAS leader.
For his part, the Ambassador of Chile to the White House, Juan Gabriel Valdés, said the launch represents the culmination of a years-long process: "What we must do is remain at the disposition of América Solidaria; tomorrow when we hear about the projected work plans, we will decide where we can be useful".
The Executive Chair of the foundation, Benito Baranda, thanked the Chilean diplomatic mission and American institutions for the support they have given to the project. "What we dream for América Solidaria is a greater justice, drawing on the wealth in our Hemisphere. We must seek regional integration not only across states or markets, but also through the communities of citizens," said Baranda.
The launch of the United States chapter of the organization was also attended by its Chair, Alex Foxley; Executive Director, Sebastian Villarreal; the Chair of the Board, Rodrigo Jordan, and the Permanent Representative of Chile to the OAS, Juan Pablo Lira, among other personalities from diplomatic and civil organizations.
