The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received from the Minister of Defense of Argentina, Agustín Rossi, copies of 280 minutes of meetings held by the Military Juntas during the dictatorship that ruled his country from 1976 to 1983, which were discovered in October 2013.

During the meeting held at the institution’s headquarters in Washington, DC, Minister Rossi explained that the documents were found by the Armed Forces of Argentina while carrying maintenance activities in the Cóndor Building, headquarters of the Air Force, which constitutes “one of the most important discoveries since the return to democracy".

Secretary General Insulza expressed appreciation for the visit as well as the delivery of the reports, emphasizing the importance of the documents discovered, especially within the context of human rights. “There is no doubt that this discovery will contribute to clarify some facts on one of the most tragic and darkest chapters of the history of Argentina,” he asserted. The minutes are available here.

Furthermore, at the meeting the two officials examined the evolution of democracy in the region and other issues regarding elections, security and economic and political development in the Hemisphere.
