OAS Secretary General Met with the Minister of Education of Suriname

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Minister of Education of Suriname, Ashwin Adhin, with whom he discussed upcoming events related to education in the Hemisphere and the policy priorities given by his government to this matter.

At the meeting, held at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, Minister Adhin said that the educational policy of his country is based on the creation of synergies that foster the economic and social development of citizens. The Surinamese Minister also expressed his gratitude for the contribution the OAS makes in its capacity as secretariat of the meetings of Ministers of Education of the Americas, which seventh edition was held in Suriname in 2012 and eighth edition will take place in 2015.

For his part, Secretary General Insulza outlined the efforts led by the Organization to expand and diversify the scholarships program that represents a significant part of the OAS work in the area of education. He also explained the main strategies the Secretariat uses to promote education through political dialogue, training, creation and strengthening of networks and partnerships, as well as fostering technical cooperation.
