The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Mayor of Bogotá, Gustavo Petro, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.
Secretary General Insulza and Mayor Petro talked about the situation of the Colombian politician, who was dismissed and disqualified by the Office of the Colombian Prosecutor from holding public office for a period of 15 years. The OAS Secretary General heard the proposals of Mayor Petro and explained that "the issue is in the hands of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR)."
"The Commission is the voice of the OAS in the area of Human Rights and the OAS should not have two voices on the same subject," said the head of the OAS to explain the Organization’s position regarding the situation of Mayor Petro.
Mayor Petro attended the meeting, held at the office of the OAS Secretary General, with the Secretary of Social Integration of the Mayor of Bogotá, Jorge Rojas, and attorney Carlos Rodríguez Mejía.
