The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the President of the Board of the Electoral Service of Chile (SERVEL), Patricio Santamaria, and commended the entity’s performance during the second round of the presidential elections held in the country on Sunday, December 15.

At the meeting, the leader of the hemispheric institution said that the speed at which the elections’ results were delivered "indicates SERVEL’s state-of-the art level in technical management” and expressed an interest in exploring venues of cooperation between the OAS and that entity in order to convey and share positive experiences with other electoral authorities of the countries in the Hemisphere.

The recently concluded electoral process is the first in Chile at which the OAS was present in response to an invitation from SERVEL. During the second round, the delegates who attended on behalf of the Secretary General were Carmen Moreno, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM/OAS) and Juan Carlos Roncal, Specialist of the Secretariat of Political Affairs of the Organization.
