The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey agreed today to hold the 37th Model OAS General Assembly (MOAS) between September 25 and 27 in Queretaro, Mexico, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution.
OAS Assistant Secretary General Nestor Mendez recalled that the MOAS program began in 1980 and that it is one of the "emblematic programs" of the Organization. "Its mission is to promote democratic values among the youth of the hemisphere and to highlight the role of the OAS as the region's principal multilateral forum for strengthening democracy, human rights, security and integral development," added Assistant Secretary General Mendez.
Meanwhile, the Vice President for Engagement and Development of the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Alejandro Poiré, said that it is essential to teach young people to live in democracy and to use freedom with conscience and a sense of shared responsibility. "That is why the Monterrey Institute of Technology is proud to have been selected to host the next Model OAS General Assembly," added the representative of the Mexican educational institution.
For his part, the Chair of the Permanent Council and Ambassador of Uruguay, Washington Abdala, said that it is key for the OAS to reach out to the new generations of the Americas. "Teaching young people to understand that international institutions and national territories in the democratic institutional space are the essential place to be is one of the most important activities of the OAS," said the Uruguayan diplomat.
The theme of the 37th MOAS for universities is "Building the Americas of the Future: Emerging Technologies, Social Responsibility and Sustainability."
