The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and the Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, today met the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ambassadors of the Central American Integration System (SICA) attending the forty-third regular session of the OAS General Assembly under way in Antigua, Guatemala.

The main topic of discussion was the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas prepared by the region's experts under the direction of the Secretary General Insulza with the aim of examining counter-narcotics policies and putting into perspective possible approaches in the search for a solution to the drug problem.

Insulza stressed the challenge that the Report represents in terms of opening a long-awaited debate that was both inevitable and necessary for tackling an issue that threatens every country in the region.

Also at the meeting was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Fernando Carrera, who thanked Secretary General Insulza for the effort and his perspicacity in translating the mandate from the Summit of the Americas into an invaluable document that would provide a basis for coordinated action in the fight against drugs.
