The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Republic of Panama today agreed to hold the 39th Assembly of Delegates of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) in Panama City on May 25-26, to continue advancing the gender and women's rights agenda in the hemisphere.
The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, noted that the Assembly of Delegates plans to adopt a new CIM Strategic Plan for the coming years and recalled that the hemispheric institution has a history of fighting for women's rights that began with the creation of the Inter-American Commission of Women in 1928, "the only hemispheric political forum to advance this agenda."
For her part, the Minister of Social Development of Panama, María Inés Castillo, said that by holding the Assembly of Delegates in her country, her government will seek to position "at the top of the agenda of the Americas the priorities of women, in all their diversity" and added that "the OAS is a strategic partner to achieve" that objective.
The agreement was signed during a virtual ceremony that connected the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, with the headquarters of Panama's Ministry of Social Development, located in Panama City.
