The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Peru, Eda Rivas, at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
During the meeting, the two discussed the basic aspects of the ongoing debate among Member States on the Strengthening of the Inter-American System of Human Rights (ISHR), which will end with an Extraordinary General Assembly on March 22.
They also addressed the political context in the hemisphere, in particular issues related to security and the Report on the drug problem in the Americas which is being prepared by the OAS under the supervision of Secretary General Insulza, and which emanates from a mandate of the Sixth Summit of the Americas, held last year in Cartagena, Colombia. Minister Rivas is participating this week in the 147th Session of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which is taking place at OAS headquarters.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanente Representative of Peru to the OAS, Ambassador Walter Albán Peralta, and the Chief of Staff of the Secretary General, Ambassador Hugo de Zela.
