The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Political Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean (OPALC) today signed a cooperation agreement to establish a strategic alliance to collaborate on initiatives to improve the electoral and democratic institutions of the Member States of the OAS.

This project stems from the need for closer ties between academic institutions and the OAS to contribute to the generation of knowledge to improve electoral processes and democratic systems in the countries of the region. Among the actions mentioned in the agreement are the participation of OPALC students, researchers and professors in OAS Electoral Observation Missions (EOMs); the joint development of annual research and case studies on democracy and elections in Latin American and the Caribbean; and the organization of seminars and workshops intended primarily for those working in the fields of academics, politics, and international cooperation.

Through coordination mechanisms with academic institutions, the OAS General Secretariat demonstrates its commitment to continuing the consolidation of a permanent and professional service of electoral and technical observation and cooperation for its Member States.
