The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met in Belmopan with the Primer Minister of the Caribbean country, Dean Oliver Barrow.

The dialogue, held in the Prime Minister’s Office, focused on the negotiations between Belize and Guatemala regarding their territorial dispute, a process the OAS has provided both political and technical support to for several years.

The meeting also dealt with other topics such as economic issues in Belize, crime, security and problems associated with indigenous peoples' rights.

In his visit to Belize, Secretary General Insulza also met with the Foreign Minister of Belize, Wilfred Elrington, and the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, as well as the leader of the Opposition, Francis Fonseca.

The head of the OAS was on Monday in Guatemala City, where he took part in the meeting of the Group of Friends of the General Secretariat for Belize-Guatemala, with both Foreign Ministers.
