The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Suriname, Winston Lackin, within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly.

At the meeting Minister Lackin reiterated his gratitude to the OAS for sending a fact-finding mission related to the request of the government of Suriname to assist in the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission.

The Secretary General informed the Minister about the need for a decision by the government of Suriname on the objectives, composition, and application of the results of such a commission, so that it can examine all the cases with the participation of the involved parties.

The Secretary General also reiterated his offer, if deemed necessary, to promote a national dialogue that would allow for the generation of the conditions of legitimacy needed to achieve a process both credible and useful to Surinamese society.

The Foreign Minister of Suriname welcomed the information provided by the Secretary General and said he will announce the decision of his government on these issues as soon as possible.
