Register for the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Teaching Critical Thinking in Action: Sustainable Energy in the Science Classroom- 4th Edition

Energy is an important aspect of economic development. As such, the development and use of domestic natural resources for electricity, combined with energy efficiency measures, are essential to facilitate a transition to a more sustainable energy future for the region.

Sustainable development can only be achieved when people are well informed of the challenges and have the relevant knowledge, skills and motivation to address them. Science education brings environmental awareness, and provides skills consistent with sustainable development. Indeed, education and sustainability are inextricably linked.

The MOOC Critical Thinking in Action: Sustainable Energy in the Science Classroom- 4th Edition will equip teachers with the tools to help students identify and think about the complexities of sustainable development issues. The course will employ methodologies such as Socratic Seminar, Academic Conversation Skills, Project Based Learning and Service Learning to foster the development of critical thinking competencies and explore the topic of sustainable energy. The methodologies will permeate every aspect of the teaching-learning experience, from lesson planning to lesson delivery to the assessment of knowledge.

The content of this course was developed within the framework of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) of the Department of Sustainable Development of the OAS. ECPA supports initiatives that tackle the challenges of energy security and climate change in the region and thus, sustainable energy is a cross-cutting theme in the topics covered in this MOOC.
