Buenos Aires — In the context of the working visit to Argentina carried out May 18-20 by the Rapporteur for that country, Commissioner Francisco Eguiguren, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) decided to accept the State’s invitation to visit Milagro Sala in Women’s Unit No. 3 of the Penitentiary Service, known as the “Penal del Alto Comedero,” in the province of Jujuy, Argentina.

This visit will be carried out in the framework of a request for precautionary measure currently pending before the IACHR, in which Milagro Sala is the proposed beneficiary. The IACHR and the Argentine State are in the process of coordinating the date for the visit. Both the Commission and the State are interested in this visit taking place in the next few weeks, before the end of June.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote the respect for and defense of human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
