Seminar on “The Internet
Access Ecosystem and Network Neutrality” |
|
The Seminar on “The Internet Access Ecosystem and
Network Neutrality” will be held on May 10, 2010,
the date before the start of the PCC.I meeting.
This seminar is being jointly organized by PCC.I
and Internet Society (ISOC) and its principal aim
involves three core topics, which in turn are
closely tied to each other: how the environment in
which Internet evolves operates (the Internet
Model), the endless number of players and processes
that comprise Internet and make it possible to gain
access to Internet (the Internet Ecosystem), and the
linkage of these factors with one of the most
current problems regarding Internet development,
namely the concept of Network Neutrality, which is
being replaced in discussions by Open
Inter-networking (as yet there is no common
definition in Spanish for this concept). The seminar
shall make it possible to achieve a common
understanding of these topics, their
inter-relationships and interactions, for the
purpose of reporting on the various stages of the
discussion on these subjects. |

Region’s progress toward IPv6
By Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of
LACNIC |
|
Over the past few years, the topic of implementing
IPv6 (a new version of the Internet Protocol
designed to replace version 4 - IPv4) has been
highly popular and is an item on the agendas and
activities of many countries and organizations. As
we approach the hypothetical date when the central
pool of IPv4 addresses shall end (at some time in
2011), increasingly more attention has been focused
on this issue. |

Internet Access
Ecosystem
By Internet Society |
|
The Internet is an ecosystem in
which different components have different roles and
needs. So, in order to support the current growth in
Internet access, we need to look beyond the
traditional confines of telecommunications. Even
though an ecosystem is stable by nature, it also
evolves. And the Internet ecosystem has an amazing
speed of evolution. In order to sustain the current
growth and stability there are certain principles
upon which the Internet ecosystem is based which
should be preserved. For example, a crucial element
of the Internet’s development and success has been
the use of multi-stakeholder, open, bottom-up, and
inclusive decision making processes, along with
cooperative and collaborative working arrangements. |

The fiber optic
By Jorge Pierri, Universidad Católica del
Uruguay |
|
Optical fiber is a waveguide in the form of a highly
transparent material wire designed to transmit
information over long distances using optical
signals.
The fiber is made from high purity silica. With only
2 kg of this material we can manufacture more than
40 kms
of optical fiber.
The manufacturer starts with cylindrical silicon
ingots that become yarns by a controlled fusion
process, then the threads are coated with a
protective layer. |

Quality of Service in
Internet
By Juan Velarde Sagastegui, Instituto Nacional de Investigación y
Capacitación de Telecomunicaciones del Perú (INICTEL-UNI)
Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) |
|
Quality of Service (QoS) can be implemented in different ways, one
is on the Internet Protocol IP, which is more
commonly known as TCP / IP.
There is also a specification for implementing the
concept of quality of service at a lower level
network layer, at the level of liaison with the ATM
technology, which derives a variant that is also
capable of differentiation in MPLS flows.
It is also mentioned as the network management
protocol SNMP which can be used to provide quality
information service. |
